Dad of Diabetic Delivers Big Time
Snohomish County Author Analysis
Everett Source has reviewed the book “The Adventures of Jason Roy Mouse” by Snohomish County children’s author Jeff Stephen Maki. In the evaluater’s opinion this is an absolutely fantastic resource for diabetic children. It is well written in a lingo that kids can identify with, yet it is educational and entertaining with a fun upbeat rhyming scheme that makes it a wonderful family book. It can be read out loud by the parent or for those kids that can read, it can be a fun lap-book to ponder. The illustrations are amazing and remind us of something out of Disney movie. In addition the message is completely positive and designed to give the children (and the parents) a sense of peace and hope about the diabetic challenge. Everett Source asked the author to write out some thoughts about the book and that follows below. We highly recommend this book for diabetic children. It should help them cope with this serious disease. Also we’ve posted imagery from the book below, each of the pages are filled with this type of imagery.
We give it our best rating of 10 stars.
My Thoughts About My Diabetic Book For Kids
by Jeff Stephen Maki
As a father of a diabetic child I know what it is like when your child is first diagnosed. Yes, there are so many fears and anxieties to deal with. As a parent the one thing you want to do is lessen the psychological impact of diagnosis on your child. I started thinking about how I could help both the parent and the child in that regard. I decided on a children’s book for getting a comforting messagae across. That is why I decided to use my writing and illustration skills to create a children’s book that is specifically designed for the kids who have the disease. When our son was diagnosed there was not a lot of child – oriented literature that was not so clinical. We wanted something that was just simply fun for the parent and child to share — something that would help ease the tension and the anxiety. And believe me there is anxiety, but it will subside and life will go on and everything turns out OK. That’s the message here. It is the emotional challenge that is the toughest to overcome – for both parent and child.
I made this story about a diabetic mouse who travels the world and lives life to the fullest. He shows your child that living and prospering with diabetes is really about having the right attitude. In fact, your diabetic life style of focusing on good health can actually be an advantage. I wanted to make this book is fun.
Since my son was diagnosed with diabetes, I know how important it is to let children know that everything will be OK, and that in fact, things will be fantastic. I put a lot of my color hand-painted illustrations into the book because kids respond to imagery. But first I tried to create entertaining rhyming verses similar to a Dr. Seuss-type style.
The book is entitled “The Adventures of Jason Roy Mouse” (Jason is the name of my son), and it is available on Amazon. Or you can get it through this link — which is the publishing wing of Amazon.
The Image below is of the final page in the book, and it sums up what the message is all about. That message is simply this: The Diabetic Life-Style is actually very healthy and your child will actually succeed better in life when it comes to living a healthy life style. All will be OK. I know. Each page is actually 8″ wide and 10 ” high (larger than it appears here.)
The image below is the text on the back cover of the book.
